APJ Kalam: The man whose mystique endured a myriad controversies...!!!

"I am completely indigenous," APJ Abdul Kalam told The New York Times in 1998.

Nobody could have put it better. Kalam was the embodiment of every Indian ideal. His rags-to-success story made him an achiever against insurmountable odds; contribution to Indian defence and military gave him the aura of a nationalist; conduct in the Rashtrapati Bhawan turned him into a People's President-- a People's Prince type epithet that instantly gave the West a measure of his popularity; and his inspiring speeches and books made him a hero of the youth and children.

As a son, student, scientist, President, teacher, preacher, poet, writer, aficionado of classical Indian music, inspiration for a film (I am Kalam) and the new Chacha of children of India, Kalam lived an all Indian dream.
"In recent history, only a few had endeared themselves to the young and old, poor and the rich, and to people belonging to different faiths," former finance minister P Chidambaram rightly summed up Kalam's enormous popularity.

Kalam had many virtues that we hold close to our heart. Never give up, don't let failure destroy your dream, concentrate on your karma without thinking of the result, don't let success get to your head and put country above race and religion. Kalam practiced all of them.

As a student born in a humble family, he sold newspapers to support the family and finance his education. When Kalam was rejected for the job of a fighter pilot, a dream he had nourished since childhood, he took up an entry-level post at Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd.

And there was no looking back. A man, who was considered not good enough to fly a plane, became the architect of India's missile programme. From somebody who was rejected as a fighter, Kalam went on to become the face of India's nuclear programme. Kalam showed the world that he had wings of steel and determination of iron.
Kalam's karma brought him not just the deserved fruits of labour, but much more than that. "Kalam did not seek office; the office sought him," Natwar Singh memorably said after he was elected President. He remains a compelling example of how a karma yogi becomes destiny's favourite child.

Kalam was not the original choice for President in 2002. It was widely believed that PC Alexander, principal secretary to former PM Indira Gandhi, would get the job. Alexander, who was the governor of Maharashtra during Atal Bihari Vajpayee's government, was acceptable to most of the NDA constituents. And his past made him believe that even the Congress would back him. To his dismay, Sonia Gandhi refused to back Alexander's candidature.

For a very brief period, it seemed vice-president Krishna Kant would get the job. But he was also denied the opportunity after being tipped off to be ready for the election.

During this period, the BJP was trying to shed its rabid pro-Hindutva image -- a pursuit that ultimately ended with LK Advani's ill-fated paean to MA Jinnah. And Mulayam Singh, it is believed, offered a deal that the BJP couldn't resist. (Ironically, when Kalam became the front-runner for the President's post in 2012, it was Mulayam Singh who backed out at the last minute, paving the way for Pranab Mukherjee's election.)

When the Samajwadi Party agreed to support Kalam as the next President, a consensus soon developed even within the Congress to back his presidency. His election could have been unanimous, but for the Left's decision to prop up Captain Lakshmi Sehgal as token of resistance. Kalam's tenure had the potential of getting marred with controversies. But it is an ode to his personal integrity and administrative tact that he managed to steer India through a political storm.

His biggest challenge, of course, was the issue of Sonia Gandhi's eligibility to become PM. After the Congress emerged as the single-largest party in 2004, Sonia's expected ascent to the top job created a political furore. Unexpectedly, Sonia opted out of the race and named Manmohan Singh as the party's choice for PM.

There were rumours that Sonia had backed out because President Kalam raised the issue of her Italian citizenship. But Kalam maintained a dignified silence through the brouhaha. Years later, in his memoirs, Kalam revealed that if Sonia had staked claim to the post, he would have had no option but to appoint her.

Controversies, though, dogged Kalam for his role as a nuclear scientist. Some of his critics, like Homi Sethna, questioned Kalam's credentials saying he had received his masters degree in aerospace engineering, which is completely different from nuclear engineering. Kalam's entire cult as the face of India's nuclear programme also came under cloud when K Santhanam, the site director of Pokaran II, called the test a 'fizzle' and criticised Kalam for giving a false report.

And when Kalam became the President, Princeton scholar M V Ramana attributed it to Kalam's ability to "dress up even mediocre work with the tricolour to pass them off as great achievements." But, nothing could stop Kalam from becoming a legend.

When the history of post-Independence India is written, Kalam would rank right up there, in the company of legends like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Rabindranath Tagore. He will inspire India and Indians for years to come.

In his poignant goodbye to Kalam, his aide Srijan Pal Singh says, he once asked Kalam what would he like to be remembered as: "President, scientist, writer, Missile Man, Indian 2020, Target 3 billion..what?"

Kalam replied: "Teacher."

Yes, Kalam would be remembered for teaching us the value of both Karma and Raj dharma.

Live Your Life 8 + 8 + 8...!!!

Look at leading daily life in fragments of 8 - 8 - 8

Life should be looked in the fragments of 8 + 8 + 8. Of our day, 8 hours should be kept for honest, ethical work, 8 hours for family, friends and personal health, and the balance 8 hours for sound sleep and rest.

Present Day in 21st Century is the time of fancier houses but broken homes, double incomes couples but more divorces, high-rise buildings but low-rise character, reaching the moon but not crossing the road to meet the new neighbour, today is the time of big showrooms but nothing in the store.

Today’s newspapers are filled with reports of crime, from Page 1 to the last page, white Crimes, grey crimes, black crimes. What a man ought to be, is given in our scriptures.
What a man is today is what our newspapers tell us?  Why?  Why, let us ask, with modern education, advanced media and communication systems, why are crimes increasing day by day?  Academies are giving best education but turning out less humans.
Mankind is losing values every day. Illiterates engage in small thefts of amounts in
hundreds. The educated are engaged in thefts of one lakh crores. Ethics, Morality and Spirituality seem to have lost ground.

In this background, the “8+8+8” system can work. Firstly we need to do 8 hours of honest ethical hard work. The Bhagwat Gita says, we should combine all three, “Karma Yoga”, “Gyan-Yoga” and “Bhakti-Yoga.” Doing work is only 33%. Let us look at how to do this and what thought process we should have, how to offer our work to divine power, how to get detached and work otherwise. We are just doing donkey-labour at our office.

In India we have 540 million young people in the age group of 15 to 40 years. Even if they do honest ethical work for 4 hours a day, India can become Super Power by 2020. We should work with Pride. Even when you sweep the floor, do it like Michaelangelo.

Take the example of an aeroplane. When it is on the ground, each of its parts has less or more value but when it is 40,000 feet high, even a small screw has high value, equal to that of an engine or any other part. So, we should always live at a higher level, ethically, morally and spiritually.

Let us take the example of Google whose 300 topmost brand executives met for a brainstorming session for three days, not to increase sales but to develop a message for their workforce. They finally arrived at one sentence message: “Don't Do Any Evil”. A corporate that is not doing honest, ethical work can come down like Satyam did. Almost 99.99% people are doing labour, not Karma.

As a second step, after 8 hours of honest ethical work, we should offer 8 hours to the Divine. From 9 to 6, we should work with detached attachment. After 6, we should tell to ourselves, “I am a soul.” Many of us are busy on our mobiles even at 11.45 pm. Great persons of our times like Steve Jobs, Warren Buffet never take a call after 6 pm. We can try and confirm that if we wish.

According to Warren Buffet’s wife, in last more than 50 years of their married life, they have not missed a single day of their evening walk.

Have you heard about the Australian nurse who wrote a book after interviewing hundreds of terminally Ill patients? She asked them to fill up a form and according to her findings, most of the dying people had Five Major Regrets of their Life. One of them was “Why did I work so much? For whom I worked so much? Extra work was lying as extra money in the Banks or as an investment. Un-thoughtful donkey-labour.

If you take your work as hobby, you never get tired. Examples exist of Newton, Einstein, Vallabhbhai Patel. If you do such detached work, you will not require any sleeping pills.

In 8 hours of sleep and rest, we should be in the conscious state of not worrying about past or future. Live a moment at a time. 90% diseases are psychosomatic. We suffer because our mind is not stable. We are always in the state of worry. We should always remember 3 H’s, Health, Hygiene and Hobby and the 3 F’s: Family, Friends and Faith.

FAITH in God is a must. If we just realize the energy, we can experience God within us. In last 15 to 25 years, lots of research has been done in area of Social Relations, Health and Management.  Even doctors first write “Rx” meaning “Thou take care”, before they prescribe any medicine. When the question of Faith in God comes, we should never ask or doubt about fundamentals. In cricket, have we ever asked “Why there are only 3 Stumps and not 4? Or when you get a cup of Ice cream, do you ask whether the milk used is of buffalo or cow? So enjoy the fruits.

Even top British Management gurus and professionals have confirmed that faith is advantageous and beneficial. These were highlights of Swami Gyanvatsalji’s discourse on the 8 + 8 + 8 principle on Saturday, 18th July, 2015 at Hotel Tansha Regency in Baroda organized by Indian Plastic Institute. It was indeed a life-enriching event

Swamiji referred to his speech in front of 400 Scientists, who asked him about the proof of existence of God. Swamiji answered that Power of GOD exists 24 x 7 x 365 days in the form of Sun, whom we call “Surya Devata”. Like in Science, Mathematics and other subjects we always assume something and final results are always based on certain assumptions. Swamiji knows this very well being Chemical Engineer himself. So, if we just assume that the Sun God wants to take rest for a day and refuse to rise tomorrow morning, what will happen? And we do not have any replacement for the Sun. This and many other facts prove that God does exist. May GOD bless ALL.

Why Father's Day and Mother's Day? Why not Everyday??? ¬¬ Late Syedna Mohammad Burhanuddin

Talking about the celebrations of the Father's and Mother's Day somewhere in the western half of the world, Late Dr. Syedna Saheb told in his sermon "Why celebrate Father's Day and Mother's Day? Why not Everyday?." That thought was so influential in my mind that yes he was right. Do we need to celebrate it with days. Could not we give them the respect they deserve? They sacrifice themselves for everything we want. I can connect myself with it because after my father left us and went to the another world, my mother has taken care of me and given me the Love of both Father and Mother. She has been my soul mate for all this year, and even if I don't have a friend in my life, I know I have my mother and that's enough.

I have said this earlier somewhere that there will be only two (2) persons in your life who will not be envious and jealous about you and that's your Father and Mother. Rest all is, well I don't need to say.

Love your Father and Mother, if you can't, watch out for people who don't have one and then you will realize their importance.

Slowly and steadily, We need to put locks on each and every OLD AGE HOME of the country...!!!

Do Your Bit..!!!

Yesterday it was Chartered Accountants Day, the day of my profession. I was proud that I am also doing bit for my Country. I was happy, went home from office and was just going to have dinner to a place after the Maghrib Prayer. I was waiting for my roommates for the dinner and one girl came near me to ask for something to eat. I did not have anything to give to her at that time. I told her about that. She went away sad. But then I realised that my roommate is up in my room and so while telling that girl to wait, I called my roomie to bring the Orange which I got a day before. I asked that girl about where she lived, why she was asking for food. She told me that she and her family had eaten nothing from the very morning. It was okay because it was Ramadan, but she told me that we did not even have the Sehri (Breakfast before the Fast). I said okay I will give you what I have. While talking to her I realised that she did not wear her footwear, her feet had rashes and they would bleed at any time now. She told me that I did not have any Chappal or shoes. For the first time since 2 years I literally had tears in my eyes seeing that girl’s pain. I never cry, it’s not easy for me to cry, it’s next to impossible for me to cry. But that pain gave me a reality check about my country.  Meanwhile I told my roomie to bring my Sandals so that I could give my Chappals to that girl. I did not want to give that chappals, because they were my favourites, but that pain let me gave her.

If a small person like me can think and give, why not you? You just not need to listen to others to give, you just have to listen to yourself. You have to listen to the human in you. Today, there are many organizations who work like this, but you do not need them because you yourself can do it. Just share that thing and I am sure you will feel happy.

We discussed it in our home last night and I got a very good thought from a friend. He told me Clean India should not be to clean the streets and such stuff, it should really mean to clean the poverty. It should be to empower the person so that they don’t sleep on the streets. I would like our Prime Minister Narendra Modi Sir to look into it.

And one more thing, I am sure you will feel happy and you will feel content. The girl I was talking about, she gave me the smile which I would never forget. I felt happy about myself and I am proud that I am doing this for the people and for my country. And I have personally decided to take care of that girl by giving her the best possible life that she deserve.
